The Fastest and Easiest Way to Learn Jazz Guitar Skills…
Without Spending Hours on Boring Exercises
For over a decade, I spent a week or two every summer teaching at a jazz camp in eastern Washington. It was a lot of fun for me, but a pretty intense camp for the students.
I started out as a teaching assistant, and eventually worked my way up to a faculty position teaching jazz guitar and other classes.
The biggest challenge for me and the other guitar instructors at this camp was the wide range of ability levels we ran into with the campers.
Some of the highschool-aged students were already playing gigs with professionals in their hometowns.
Others literally got their first guitar about a week before the camp!
It was an intense camp, with lots of playing. I’m talking 8-10 hours a day of classes, big bands, and small jazz ensembles.
And most of the instructors weren’t guitar players, so people who were new to the instrument needed all the help they could get.
I knew I had to find a way to get the newer players up to speed, and still give the top players something that would challenge them over the week.
What the guitar students at this camp needed was the information that would help them right now… and also have the tools to improve over the course of the next year on their own.
They didn’t have time to learn every little detail about what they were playing. They needed something they could look at real quick in their classes to find out where to put their fingers.
Jazz Guitar Basics, Simplified
I started looking for fast, simple ways to give them the information they really needed, without burying them in basic theory. There had to be a way to give students the least they needed to know, and have them sounding good at the end of the week.
I took lessons with every jazz guitarist I could find, trying to see how different players approached different issues in jazz guitar playing.
Over time I pieced things together and came up with a simple, effective formula for learning jazz guitar. It was a stripped-down approach using the minimum amount of chord, scale, and arpeggio shapes.
This let the students at camp focus heavily on one or two options, rather than get overwhelmed with every single possibility on the fretboard.
And it worked.
Introducing The Jazz Guitar Survival Guide
It felt like I had cracked the code on helping people learn jazz guitar fast.
This new approach made learning jazz guitar simple for anyone who could read a simple chord or scale diagram.
I was able to put common music theory concepts right onto the fretboard, so the students started learning music theory without even knowing it.
These new methods cut down on the sheer amount of information most people had to wade through before they could actually play jazz guitar.
(The reason some people are intimidated by jazz guitar in the first place is that it seems like there is so much to learn)
In the end, I created a handbook that gave these students quick access to the skills they would need throughout the week. It made them and the students around them sound better.
And as a bonus, the handbook contained enough material for them to continue to improve their skills all year long.
What I came up with is a “plug and play” method that can help you get through any jazz song you’re working on.
It can give you quick access to the information you need, whenever you need it. You’ll also develop essential jazz guitar skills without getting buried with extra information.
The Perfect Answer for Teachers and Students
At this point, I’ve used this method for years.
It quickly became a cornerstone of my teaching in private lessons, clinics, camps, and workshops. Whenever someone needed to learn jazz guitar as fast as possible (like an upcoming college or jazz band audition), this was the material I gave them.
Not only has it worked for my students, but I use this approach in my own playing as well.
I use this material in my own playing all the time in professional bands, pit orchestras, jazz club gigs, and recording sessions.
And I use it, because it just works.
Jazz Guitar Survival Guide is great as a quick reference in rehearsals or practice sessions, or as a template to identify skills you need to work on in your playing.
“THE MOST HELPFUL GUITAR BOOK I’VE EVER SEEN…”
I put this book together with busy students in mind. My entire goal is to put you on the fast track to being a better jazz guitar player. And I want it to be easy for you.
You don’t always need to know every little detail about that new scale or chord… you just need to know how to play it!
And that’s where Jazz Survival Guide comes in handy.
Nothing is more frustrating than trying to look up a new scale or chord, and having to read through pages of theory explanation first. It tends to leave you more confused than when you started…
And sometimes you still don’t know exactly how to play that new scale or chord.
That’s why I take you straight to the good stuff – how to play the things you need to be able to play. You’ll get straight to the “meat and potatoes” of jazz guitar, without too much extra explanation.
The music theory that is included in the book is baked right into the lessons – so you’re learning theory without even thinking about it. You’ll just know how certain chords and scales are built, right on your fretboard.
